When a British couple went on holiday with their kids to visit the remnant of the Maglona Roman fort in Cumbria, England last week, they were delighted to find an Roman artifact sticking up out of the ground after it had been exposed by a heavy rain storm. The sandstone fragment was about the size of a tea saucer, and the Roman letters M, R and P were still clearly visible on it. The husband is a freelance archaeologist, and he believes that the artifact may have once spelled the name of settlement.

Maglona was abandoned a few decades before the Romans pulled out of Britain, in AD 410. His wife is the one who found the stone alongside a wall that overlooks the remains of the fort, which would have been garrisoned by about 1000 auxiliary soldiers who were there to support the eastward side of Hadrian's wall.

The classic roman history book has been written by Edward Gibbon and has been reviewed by Amazon.com as being somewhat daunting, but two weeks into reading this roman history book can grow on a person; especially once one gets used to the author's periodic style of writing. The book on the history of the Roman world should ideally be read like a collection of short stories or essays. The reviews also state that the best way to read this roman history book is by keeping a summary of Roman Imperial history at hand, or even one of the books on Rome by Michael Grant or even Encyclopedia Britannica's articles on the Roman Empire and Roman history. Gibbon's book on roman history has been as a great one for bedtime reading. The footnotes have some interesting insights as well.
